Understanding Automatic Localization and Unit System Preselection

Learn how Measmerize uses Shopify's localization data to automatically pre-select measurement units, bra sizing systems, and footwear parameters to create a localized, frictionless experience for every shopper.

Updated over a month ago

To provide a seamless user experience, the Measmerize widget is designed to automatically detect a shopper's regional preferences. By utilizing the localization.country.iso_code parameter directly from your Shopify store, the widget determines the initial state of the interface the moment a shopper opens it.

Automatic Unit System Preselection (Metric vs Imperial)

The primary function of this integration is to determine which Unit System (Metric or Imperial) is displayed by default. This ensures that the first measurements a user sees—and is asked to provide—align with their local standards.

  • United States (US): The widget defaults to the Imperial System, using feet/inches (ft/in) and pounds (lb).

  • United Kingdom (GB): The widget defaults to a localized UK System, which includes support for feet/inches (ft/in) and stone (st) for weight.

  • Metric System (cm/kg): For all other global regions, the widget automatically defaults to the metric system.

Note: While the system preselects these units for convenience, shoppers always retain the ability to manually toggle between units within the widget settings if they prefer.

Regional Sizing Logic & Preselection

Beyond height and weight units, the ISO country code is used to automate the preselection of specific regional standards for specialized categories.

1. Apparel: Bra Sizing System of Reference

For women's apparel, the shopper’s country code is used to automatically preselect the Bra Sizing System of Reference. This ensures the widget initially displays the sizing flag and standards (e.g., US, FR, UK, EU) that match the shopper's local market, providing immediate familiarity with the size labels.

2. Footwear: Country of Origin & Size Charts

The localization parameter is critical for the Footwear widget, where it automates the preselection of two specific fields:

  • Country of Origin: The widget preselects the shopper’s country as the default origin.

  • Reference Size Chart: The system automatically selects the regional size chart (e.g., EU vs. US) corresponding to that locale.

Why Country of Origin Matters: In the Measmerize footwear algorithm, the "Country of Origin" is a vital data point. Geographical origin has a statistically significant influence on the shape and volume of the foot. By collecting this information, our algorithm can more accurately compare the shopper's physical measurements against your specific product measurement charts to produce a precise recommendation.

Implementation Logic

The preselection is handled via a direct comparison between the Shopify ISO code and our supported list of regional configurations. This process occurs instantly upon the widget's initialization, ensuring that the shopper's journey toward an accurate size recommendation is as streamlined and professional as possible.
